What Are You Doing to Ensure Future Growth and Success?

hyf-header_editHacking Your Future is a free weekly memo that provides readers with practical and applicable tips for uncovering their future success. Readers are challenged to re-imagine their personal and professional narratives, goals, and objectives, and re-invent their lives and work in a manner consistent with their new vision of the future.

This weeks focal point: Before my family left for a week-long vacation this summer, we arranged for someone to water our new vegetable and herb garden. Despite rain in the forecast, we decided to be proactive and insure the work we had put into this garden which began several months ago when we first turned over the soil. When we returned from our trip, our grass was very dry and brown, but our garden was glorious. Had we decided to wing it, hope for the best, or rely on the unreliability of weather forecasts, then we may have returned to a withered and unrecoverable garden that would have made all the work we had done null and void.

The same can be said for anything we are building or trying to grow. Laying the ground work, tilling the soil, and planting the seeds are all required to have a garden; however, you will never enjoy a harvest if you do not invest in the regular maintenance of your garden. When times are tough and resources are scarce, we often forget all the work we invested in our endeavors when resources were plentiful. This short-sighted thinking has dire consequences for both our present and our future. The amount of time, energy, and resources required to repair the damage of doing nothing will greatly exceed the investment required to prevent disaster and ensure future growth.

Furthermore, when the ground all around you is dry and whithering, the healthy and flourishing not only attract more attention, they inspire a change of action. If you’re hunkered down and waiting for the days of plenty to return, you’re putting yourself and your company at an extreme disadvantage.

The Fulcrum: Nobody gets into business and strives for mediocrity and uniformity. Now is the time to raise the bar and give others something to reach for. What are you doing today to ensure future growth and success?
