Shaping Your Future Weekly Memo:
Valuable and Meaningful Actions

NOVEMBER 25, 2015
Shaping Your Future is a free weekly memo that provides readers with practical and applicable tips for uncovering their future success. Readers are challenged to re-imagine their personal and professional narratives, goals, and objectives, and re-invent their lives and work in a manner consistent with their new vision of the future.

This Weeks Focal Point:

The photo you see above is a picture of two trees my father and I planted last year when we moved into our new home in Charlotte. The tree to the right survived and thrived through the year. Through a wet and soggy spring and a hot and dry summer, this tree would not be defeated. The tree to the left however, did not last but a few months.

Last week as I was mowing the yard for the last time before spring the thought occurred to me that regardless of the fact that this tree had been dead for the better part of a year, I was still mowing and weed-eating around it. Why was I continuing to modify my actions to accommodate something that no longer had life or value instead of uprooting and removing it? I could plant something else there or at the very least save myself some time by not having to work around it. I was reminded of how important it is to periodically ask myself this question in all areas of work and life.

Are the actions I am taking today still proving valuable and meaningful or are they merely force of habit?

To go even deeper, are they relevant to my current beliefs and objectives or do they serve an old mindset and ideology?

As the end of the year is rapidly approaching maybe now is the time to identify those things in our personal and professional lives that need "uprooting". By doing so we make space for areas in our lives that are growing and thriving.
